Roseann D. Sommers, wife of the late Donald Sommers, died peacefully on September 25, 2023. She was born on February 17, 1923, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Zeno and Mary Francis Fleege.
Roseann grew up in Byron, Illinois on her family’s farm. She graduated from Rockford High School, and attended St. Anthony College of Nursing, where she earned her RN certification. She worked at the VA Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois. After WWII, she moved to Washington DC to pursue further nursing studies. She married her college sweetheart, Donald Sommers, on June 12, 1948.
Roseann and Don moved to Brookline, NH in 1953, and raised their family of seven children. Roseann was a homemaker and worked at remodeling their home. She managed a large garden, was a wonderful seamstress, and enjoyed quilting and hooking rugs. She was involved with school activities. She was also very involved with her church and taught in the parish summer school.
At retirement, Roseann and Don moved to the Fairfield Harbour community in New Bern, NC and enjoyed 35 years of active retirement. They enjoyed travelling and Roseann was an avid golfer. She also took art classes and continued her gardening and other crafts. In their 90’s, Roseann and Don moved to Amherst, NH in 2018 to live with their son Tom and his wife Donna.
Roseann will be remembered for providing a wonderful home life for her family, her many talents, and her hard work and determination.
Roseann Sommers is survived by her children - William Sommers (Tracy), Great Diamond Island, ME, Edward Sommers (Laurel), Tucson, AZ, Joan Sommers Richter (Ernest Richter), Cushing, ME, Patricia Sommers, Weaverville, NC, Thomas Sommers (Donna Staffier-Sommers), Amherst, NH, Ellen Beery (William), Erie, CO and Mary Symuleski (Richard), North Charleston, SC. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Diehl. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Roseann was predeceased by her beloved husband of 73 years, her parents, her daughter-in-law Marcia Ducas Sommers, and her siblings – Romana Skinner, Joseph Fleege, Alma Lewis, Edward Fleege and Marion Nelson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Roseann at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 34 Amherst Street, Milford NH, beginning at 11 AM on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, followed by burial at Meadow View Cemetery, Amherst, NH. All are invited to meet directly at church.
