Rolfe H. Smith, of Natick, MA, died Saturday February 11, 2012. Mr. Smith was in his 90th year of life. He was born September 8, 1922 to William and Nita (Barchard) Smith of Melrose, MA and attended Melrose High School prior to joining the United States Army in 1942. He served in the Army during World War II, and was stationed in Africa with the Air Transport Command Unit. He earned the rank of Corporal, as well as a Good Conduct Medal, before being honorably discharged in 1945. Following his service in the Army, Mr. Smith married the love of his life, Marilyn M. Smith, with whom he would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this May. They made their home in Natick, MA and welcomed four children; Louise C. Callahan of Milford, NH, Edward D. Smith and his wife Wendy of Hillsborough, NH, Glenn H. Smith of Millis, MA, and Barry W. Smith and his fiancée Judy Antoniello of Natick, MA. Mr. Smith is also survived by 12 grandchildren, who he found great joy in spending time with; Shawna, Catherine, Elizabeth, Rebekah, Nicole, Sarah, Jonathan, Andrew, Katlyn, Jennifer, Dayna, and Courtney. He especially enjoyed being surrounded by his five great-grandchildren, Teresa, Vinny, Joey, Tyler, and Autumn. He also shared a special bond with his two beloved sisters; Louise Barrar of Sarasota, FL and Marjorie Tomer and her husband Bill, of Harwich, MA. Mr. Smith spent 46 years working as an auto mechanic, first with Cadillac of Boston, and then with Frost Motors, until his retirement in 1991. He was a communicant of the Community United Methodist Church in Wayland, MA for 60 years, serving as head usher for over 20 years. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1970-1972, as well as several other committees within the church. He was a member of the Massachusetts Freemasons, and his life was spent doing for others, including volunteering for the church, as well as the Waltham Soup Kitchen. His greatest pride in life was his family. Mr. Smith’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, February 18th, at 2pm at the Community United Methodist Church, 5 Damon Street, Wayland, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the church.
