Richard L. Songer, 62, resident of Milford, NH, died March 10, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Athens, Ohio on March 10, 1949, a son of Wyona (Moore) Songer of Bucyrus, OH and the late Herbert L. Songer. Mr. Songer resided in Milford for the past 11 years and formerly resided in Wilton for four years, Lyndeborough for a number of years and he had also lived in New Ipswich. An educator for most of his life, he had worked as a teacher with the GED Program at the New Hampshire State Women’s Prison in Goffstown, where he also re-established the Horticultural Program. He later was employed at Southern New Hampshire University and was instrumental in the online education program until his retirement. Mr. Songer enjoyed fishing, boating, wildlife, reading and visits to the ocean. He most especially loved spending time with his family and his dogs. He was known by many of his friends and colleagues as MCJED. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War and was a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans. In addition of his mother, family members include his wife of 39 years, Brenda G. (Corda) Songer of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Nabia and Keith Fortier of Merrimack; a son, Colin Songer and his significant other, Valerie Greene of Merrimack; a grandson, Jaxon Richard Songer; five sisters, Charlene Berry and Lori Songer, both of Bucyrus, OH, Marie Songer and Mendy McNeely, both of Galion, OH and Cathy Fike of Tiro, OH; three brothers, Herbert L. Songer, Jr. and James Songer, both of Galion, OH and Robert Songer of Royalston, MA; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial visiting hours are Monday, March 14th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 am in St. Patrick’s Church, 34 Amherst Street, Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire, 545 Route 101, Bedford, NH 03110.
