Richard D. Carr, 91, resident of Amherst, NH, died quietly at his home on August 1, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was born in Milford, NH on July 19, 1918, a son of Charles & Eleanor (Howard) Carr. He graduated from Milford High School, Class of 1937. Mr. Carr joined the New Hampshire National Guard in September of 1939. He was transferred from Fort Dix to Camp Hulon in Texas for a year and later served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II until he was discharged in 1945. In November of 1950, he married Eleanor (Aikins) Carr. They built a home in Amherst and remained there for their entire married life. Returning from the war, he joined the Civil Service and worked at Fort Devens Air Base for several years and Hanscom Field in Bedford, MA for 25 years until his retirement. He owned and operated Hilltop Garage, Amherst, for many years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the United States and abroad. Mr. Carr was a 50-year member of Benevolent Lodge #7 F & AM in Milford, Past Patron of Puritan Chapter #29 Order of Eastern Star and was appointed Grand Representative to Scotland by the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory of Nashua, Club 7 in Milford and the Legion of Honor in the Bektash Shrine. In addition, he was a member of the Bektash Temple of Concord, a charter member of the Bektash Highlander Band, the Ricciardi Hartshorn Post #23, American Legion and Harley Sanford Post #4368 VFW. Mr. Carr was a member of the First Congregational Church of Milford. Family members include his wife, with whom he would of celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in November, Eleanor (Aikins) Carr of Amherst, NH; a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Plant Chamberlain and Peter Chamberlain of Jaffrey, NH; four grandchildren, Tori Plant and Chad Plant, both of Milford, Shelley Plant and Tyler Plant, both of Peterborough, NH; a great granddaughter, Fallyn Victoria Weeks, daughter of Shelley Plant and Ira Weeks. There are no visiting hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, August 5th at 11:30 am in Meadowview Cemetery, Foundry Street, Amherst, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
