Nancy Marie Hopey of Amherst, NH, died in Boston on May 25, 2010 peacefully surrounded by her family at Massachusetts General Hospital. She died of complications of Juvenile type one diabetes, of which she battled for 58 years. She was 66 years old. Nancy was a resident of Amherst for the last 31 years, previously residing in Chelmsford, MA and Plainsfield, NJ. Nancy was born in Quincy, MA on October 30, 1943, the daughter of the late George and Anna (Caccaro) Cappola. Educated in Weymouth, MA schools, Nancy was a graduate of Weymouth High School, Class of 1961. After raising her four children, she went on to earn her bachelors degree in Behavioral Science from University of New Hampshire in 1991. Upon graduation, she worked as a counselor at Catholic Charities in Manchester. In her early years she was employed as nurses aide at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA, where she met her husband, Edward in 1962. She also worked as a teacher's aide for many years in various schools. Nancy was a communicant of St. John Neumann in Merrimack. She was an originating member of the parish and for many years was active as a Eucharistic minister and a volunteer with the SHARE and Day Away Alzheimer's programs. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed following the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics. In her earlier years she enjoyed swimming, gardening, arts and crafts, shopping and playing golf. She enjoyed the beaches of Cape Cod and Maine. Above all, she loved spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband, Edward P. Hopey of Amherst; two daughters, Cynthia White and her husband Lewis of Amherst; Michelle Hopey of Brookline, MA; two sons, Christopher Hopey and his wife Cheryl Lucas of Nashua; Richard Hopey and his wife Marguerite of Mont Vernon; Five grandchildren, Lauren and Rachel White of Amherst; Christopher Hopey Jr. of Nashua; Jack and Ethan Hopey of Mont Vernon; two brothers George and his wife Glenna Cappola of Kingston, MA; Edward Cappola of Pembroke, MA as well as many nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Friday, May 28th from 4:00-8:00 pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 1:30 pm in St. John Neumann Church, 708 Milford Road, Merrimack, NH. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Merrimack Road, Amherst, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, NH Affiliate, 249 Canal Street, Manchester, NH 03101.
