Mavis "Mai" A. Guthrie

Mavis “Mai” Anne Secker Guthrie, 84, resident of Ledgewood Bay, Milford, NH died November 8, 2021 in Milford. She was born on June 14, 1937 in Manchester, England a daughter of Clifford Secker and Edith Anne Holden of Manchester, England. Mai was educated in Oldham, England, where she worked at Boundary Park Hospital as midwife working under Dr. Patrick Steptoe, who was known for the first test tube baby and in vitro fertilization. She would tell stories of riding her bike through the streets to deliver a baby. In Oldham she became the sister in charge of the maternity ward, where she met my Father (then, she was in charge of him !) They married in Darlington, England, Dec 22 1961. They moved around England and Scotland during my dad’s residency, then moves to Essex Ontario and British Columbia, before settling in Hollis NH. My mother raised the four of us, and after my Dad went into private practice, my mother went to run his office for many years. Mai was a member of Eastern Star in Nashua and was proud to be a Shriners lady where she started the Bektash Widows Club and held many parties . Mai’s hobbies were gardening and playing her baby grand piano. Her joy in life was taking first prize at the Cockermouth Fair for her beautiful tapestries where, I think she won ten years in a row. She would say "I think I will let someone else win this year and not enter a tapestry!” Ha - she couldn't do it, so she entered and won again! She loved to travel and was even working on her pilot's license. Mom and Dad loved flying to England and enjoying Rosebank, the house in England during the summers. One of her favorite places to be was the island of San Salvador on the beach with Dad just watching nature and running her feet in the sand. With the slides Dad took, we all felt like we were there with them. Mom, we all loved you and you will be in our hearts forever! We will make sure that Hudson knows his great Mai Mai. Sending you some butterfly kisses. Mom, we love you more than you will ever know. She was predeceased by a granddaughter; Brittney Anne Garceau and great grandson; Hunter Daniel Ardito. Family members include Robin, her loving husband who followed her 7 weeks later. Her children; Robert and Mandy of England; Victoria and David of Effingham; Alistair and Tammy of Brookline; and Iain and Kimberly of Greenfield; grandchildren, Thomas Garceau of Wilton, Oliver, Josie and James Guthrie of England, Travis and Ashley Guthrie of Brookline; Brooke and Laurel Guthrie of Milford; and Cayley Ardito of New Ipswich; and one great grandchild, Hudson Ardito. There are no services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mai and Robin’s names can be made to the Charter Oak Lodge for the restoration and preservation of the temple trompe l’oile ceiling and wall murals. This cause represents my mother and father’s goals to help their fellow Mason and Eastern Star Members. Effingham Masonic Temple Charter Oak Lodge #58 30 Town House Road, Effingham NH 03882
