Maura E. Scollin

Maura Elizabeth (Dwyer) Scollin, 79, of Milford, NH passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, after a courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer. Born May 5, 1943, in Swampscott, MA, Maura was the daughter of Marion (Fuir) Dwyer and Charles W. Dwyer. Maura graduated from Swampscott High School in 1961 and Mass. Bay Community College in 1985. Maura worked for New England Telephone, American Airlines, and Label Art, but she finally found her calling in the classroom, spending 19 years at Wilkins Elementary School in Amherst as a Teacher Assistant. Maura and her husband George were married in 1970, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott, MA, where her Uncle, Rev. George R. Fuir, SJ, officiated. They lived in Amherst for 45 years where Maura championed her family through faith, school, and sports commitments. Maura will be forever loved and remembered by her husband of 52 years, George, her brother, Steven G. Dwyer of East Boothbay, Me., her three children who adored her, Shelagh (Scollin) Bocoum and husband Amacire Bocoum and their two children Joy and Haya Bocoum (Washington, D.C.), Terry Scollin and his three children Sarah, Aidan, and Kaitlynn Scollin (Conshohocken, PA), and Katie (Scollin) Flowers and her husband Robb Flowers and their daughter Colleen Flowers (Geneva, NY). Maura and George enjoyed many trips over the years, including to Hawaii, Italy, South America, the British Isles, Nova Scotia, Bermuda, Greece, Arizona, Cape Cod, Texas, and Florida. Maura earned the nickname “Nana bubbles” due to her patience with blowing bubbles with her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to take the grandchildren out for ice cream; or mail them a crisp one dollar bill when she received a positive report about a spelling quiz or a challenging homework assignment. She enjoyed hearing the laughter of her grandchildren as they played in their backyard of 31 Windsor Drive, and she never missed a 4th of July Parade (always sitting near the bandstand!). They moved to Milford in 2019, and immediately loved the condo they purchased, When Maura saw the Loft upstairs; she was sold. The grandchildren loved playing Monopoly for hours there. They rejoined St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Milford having been parishioners there in the 1970's. The Scollins were among many families who proudly helped co-found St. John Neumann parish in Merrimack in 1981 where Maura was an active Communicant and served for many years as a Minister of Hospitality, taught Religious Education, and also volunteered at the Food Pantry. The family has especially fond memories of the transition from “Our Lady of The Hoop” to the current Church, where Fr. Ed Richard, Fr. Bob Gorski, and Fr. Aggie Jean were Pastors. The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Mary Kate Engel, Dr. A.K. Goodman, Dr. Richard Penson, and Dr. Alex Melamed, as well as the exceptional nursing team at Mass General Hospital. Over the past few months, Dr. Gautami Rao and her staff at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua supported her to balance her quality of life, as she so wanted to live as long as possible for her grandchildren. Lastly, Maura was so grateful for the friendships formed over meals and trips with her Dinner Group of over 45 years; her friends from the St. John Neumann Dinner Group; her “Tennis Babes,” her book club, and her Ponemah Green golf group. Many friends from Swampscott, Lynn, Whitefield, Amherst, Merrimack, and Milford were of such comfort to Maura over the past five challenging years as she fought her diagnosis. Above all, Maura’s most cherished time was spent with her friends and family. She will be deeply missed. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, June 19th from 4:00pm - 6:00pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH 03055. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday June 20th at 9:30am in St. Patrick Church, 34 Amherst St., Milford, NH. All may please meet at church. A Graveside service will be held later that same day at 2:30pm in St. Joseph Cemetery, 134 Broadway, Lynn, MA. All may meet at the cemetery.
