Margaret Schaefer

Margaret Schaefer, 100, a resident of Amherst, NH died May 30, 2010 at the The Elms Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Milford, NH, after a period of declining health following a hip operation on her 100th birthday. Margaret was born one of seven children to the late John and Mary Forst in Drugendorf, Bavaria Germany on April 30, 1910. Margaret immigrated to the USA in 1927. She married the late Marcus Schaefer. They lived and worked in New York City until 1965. They retired in Hawley, Pennsylvania because it reminded them of their native Germany. Margaret had to be active and worked at Woodlock Pines Resort in Hawley until she was 76 years old. Margaret’s family convinced her to move to Amherst in 1994. Margaret enjoyed knitting. She made sweaters for her family and her numerous friends. Margaret also loved to walk and visit with neighbors on Amherst’s Old Manchester Road. She had to stop these activities because of failing eyesight. Margaret loved being with her family. She will be missed by her son, Carl, and his wife, Grace, of Amherst; her three Grandchildren, Mark and his wife, Brenda of Antrim, New Hampshire, Peggy McRae of Lewiston, Maine, Carl and his wife, Nancy, of Ashland, Massachusetts; her seven Great Grandchildren, Gretchen Dec and her husband, Jaymes of Brooklyn, New York, Rebekah of West Palm Beach, Florida, William and Nathanael of Antrim, Liam of Lewiston, Melanie and Sarah of Ashland. There are no calling hours. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 2nd at 10:00 am in St. Patrick’s Church, 34 Amherst Street, Milford, NH. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Amherst, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Share Outreach, Inc., 10 Columbus Avenue, Milford, NH 03055.
