Lois H. Sidway

Mrs. Lois Sidway (nee Hobart), 95, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025, in Milford, New Hampshire at the Ledgewood Bay assisted living facility where she lived for the final year of her life.

Born on July 20, 1929, in Hinsdale, Illinois, Lois was the daughter of a family that would shape her lifelong love of learning and creativity. She pursued her education at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where she earned a teaching degree that laid the foundation for a meaningful and impactful career in education.

Lois dedicated much of her life to nurturing young minds. She taught nursery school for many years in North Salem, New York, where her warmth and patience left lasting impressions on countless children and their families. Later in life, she continued to share her passion for education by teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Her commitment to helping others learn and grow was a hallmark of her generous spirit.

Beyond the classroom, Lois found joy in music and wordplay. She was an accomplished pianist who delighted in playing for herself and others. She accompanied her father, Henry Hobart, a music professor and singer in the years before she married.

Her love of language extended to constructing crossword puzzles—a pastime that reflected both her intellect and creativity. She was published many times in the NY Times and had a regular gig with TV Guide. All those who knew her enjoyed her sharp wit and thirst for knowledge. She was known for frequently asking “where did that word or phrase originate”.

Lois was generous, loving, fun, and always willing to lend a helping hand. These qualities enriched the lives of all who knew her and will be remembered with deep affection.

She is survived by her three sons: James Sidway and his wife Sue, Jonathan Sidway and his wife Kathy, and David Sidway and his wife Lisa. She had five grandchildren: Brittany, Emily, Jamie, Jonathan, and Scott. And she had four great grandchildren: Colton, Zoey, Harvey, and Sawyer.

Lois was predeceased by her husband Peter Sidway and her brothers Henry Hobart, David Hobart, and Roger Hobart.

As a lover of animals wild and domestic, Lois cared for many pet cats during her life. Donations in memory of Lois can be made to Better Days Rescue Fund, PO Box 116, Roxbury, CT 06783.
