John S. Rubery, 70, resident of Amherst, NH, died unexpectedly on November 14, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Nashua, NH. He was born in Boston, MA on February 14, 1948, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rubery. He was raised and educated in South Boston, MA and graduated from New Hampshire College. John made his home in New Hampshire for more than 45 years having lived in Greenville, NH and Amherst, NH. He had been employed as an auto mechanic for most of his working life and loved cars. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served two tours in Vietnam. He was proud to serve his country and was Past Commander of Harley Sanford Post #4368 VFW, Milford, Past State Commander in 2009, and a member of Sweeney Post #2, American Legion, Manchester, NH. In addition, he was active in the VFW Homeless Veterans Program. He was predeceased by his wife, Sharon (Donovan) Rubery, who died in 1988. Family members include his longtime companion and fiancé, Bette Belanger of Amherst, NH; loving Papa John to Madelyn, Katelyn and Rayanne, whom he loved spending time with; his sister-in-law, Mary Jane Cranston and her husband David of Fredericksburg, VA; two brothers-in-law, Patrick Donovan and his wife Carolyn of Harwich, MA, and Thomas Donovan of Harwich, MA. Visiting hours are on Sunday, November 18th from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford. A VFW Service will be held at 2:30 pm. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Rockland, MA.
