John (Jack) X. Murphy

John (Jack) X. Murphy Jr., 86, resident of Amherst, NH died at home on January 12, 2022 after a period of declining health. He was married to Theresa (Terry) A (McGowan) Murphy until her death in 1996. Jack was born on September 5, 1935 in Boston, MA a son of the late John and Edith (Hamilton) Murphy Sr. and grew up on Haskell St in Cambridge Ma. He was raised and educated in Cambridge Ma and earned a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering at Northeastern University. Jack then applied for and received an appointment to Officers Candidate School which he completed and was then commissioned as an Officer in the US Navy Reserve. Reporting to Pensacola Florida for flight school, Jack earned his Gold Wings and became part of Naval Aviation. His Active Duty Naval Career spanned 10 years during which he served in the western pacific as well as numerous duty postings on both the east and west coast. The culmination of his abilities was evident when Jack was selected to be part of the training program introducing the Grumman A6 Intruder to the first US Marine Corp A6 Squadron. Transferring to the Navy Reserve in 1969, Jack and Terry settled in Amherst NH where he continued to serve as a reservist, and they raised their 5 children. Once off of Active Duty, Jack worked for numerous corporations in the southern NH and northern Mass areas to include Nashua Corporation and finally retiring from Analog Devices in Wilmington MA. Along the way Jack earned a MBA in Business from Rivier College in Nashua NH. Later in life he decided on yet another career change and entered into the field of health care learning to be a sonographer and home health care worker until his final retirement in 1996 Jack spent his later years doing what he enjoyed most, amateur home repair, working on the family pool, his love of reading and most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren whom he loved most of all. He will always be remembered for the smile he had when his children, who referred to him as “Pops”, and the grandchildren, who simply called him “Poppa”, visited and his generosity of home, support and guidance knew no bounds. He was a quiet contributor to numerous worldwide charities with a special desire to support St Jude. His quiet love of reading and stories led him to write of his youthful adventures growing up in Cambridge MA in the 40’s and 50’s which were then published in a local Cambridge magazine. Jack is survived by his two brothers David T. Murphy and Francis E. Murphy, his five children, Daniel K Murphy, Brian M Murphy, John X Murphy III, Jennifer M (Murphy) D’Auteuil and Christopher J Murphy.
