John J. Roberts

John J. Roberts, 92, former resident of Wilton, NH, died on October 23, 2013 in Greenback, TN. He was born in Boston, MA on January 17, 1921, a son of Peter J. and Bertha (Cain) Roberts. Mr. Roberts resided in TN for the past seven years and formerly made his home in Wilton for five years and Milford for 50 years. Prior to his retirement in 1973, he was employed as a railroad engineer for New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad for 30 years. In addition, he had worked at Ingersoll Rand in Nashua for 10 years and for the Nelson Funeral Home in Wilton, NH for 20 years. Mr. Roberts was a U.S. Army veteran having served with the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of Harley Sanford Post #4368 VFW, Milford, an Usher/Greeter and longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Wilton. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lillian (Mahan) Roberts and their son, John E. Roberts, and his second wife, Dorothy Atwood Roberts. Family members include two daughters and a son-in-law, Lillian “Lee” and Robert Grassett of Amherst, NH, and Gail A. Roberts of Greenback, TN; his adopted daughter, Sandra Hanes of Greenback, TN; a daughter-in-law, Ann Roberts of Lyman, ME; 7 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. A memorial visiting hour will be held on November 12th from 10:00-11:00 am in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, followed by a funeral service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
