Ida S. Hymowitz, longtime resident of The Carlyle passed away on May 26, 2015, at age 100. Born in New York City on July 3, 1914, she spent 93 years of her life there. A veteran teacher in Harlem and an assistant principal in the South Bronx, she cared deeply about education. She was a strong advocate for free college which she benefited from, graduating from Hunter College in 1934. She also received her M.Ed from Hunter. Her strong beliefs included higher compensation for health care workers and pension benefits for retirees. She served as president of the NY chapter of the Women’s Committee of Brandeis University which raised monies for the school’s library and she was a patron of the NYC Public Library. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah. She loved travel, reading, theater, art and knitting and had many long friendships. Ida, the widow of Charles who died in 1990, leaves behind Janet Hymowitz and her husband C. Wilson Sullivan of Amherst, N.H., Carol Hymowitz and her husband Jarlath Johnston of New York, N.Y., Phyllis and Robert Couzin of Toronto, Canada. In addition she leaves four grandchildren, Adina and Zachary Sullivan, Leah Bourne and Jennifer Couzin-Frankel as well as great-grandchildren Jonas and Sasha Frankel. Services will be held in New York City. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Share Outreach, Inc., 1 Columbus Avenue, Milford, NH 03055.
