Helen S. Julier

Helen Suzan Julier passed away peacefully on February 4, 2016. She was born in New York City on November 5, 1927, youngest child of the late Frank and Katarzyna (Ziemba) Kozlowski, both of whom immigrated in 1923 from Busk, Poland (now Ukraine). She graduated from Washington Irving High School in New York City. While she was a student at Queens College in New York, her mother died suddenly, and she would later say that she completed her degree determined to make her mother proud. After graduation, she worked in a public library in Queens, where she met her husband, the late Arthur Julier. They were married at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, in Manhattan and celebrated 63 anniversaries. They raised four children in New Hyde Park, NY, and later in Amherst, NH. Throughout her life she was involved in 4H, church groups, reading groups, and community events. After her children had grown, Helen returned to her original vocation as a librarian in the Chandler Library, Nashua. She was also a preschool teacher in Montessori and Waldorf programs. She took art classes, receiving a certificate in graphic arts from Rivier College. After retirement, she and Arthur spent a decade in service as volunteers at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. Helen loved to create and brought a bit of whimsy to everything she made. She loved to garden; she created perennial gardens for each family member, beginning with the H garden of heuchera, hemerocalis, helianthus, hydrangea, hollyhocks, hosta, and heather. Each of her grandchildren received handmade toys, clothes, and quilts. Her baking was loved by everyone. She inspired in all her children a love of nature, particularly walks in the woods and birds. Because of her, the family had years of camping adventures. Arthur and Helen traveled frequently in retirement, taking care of grandchildren or sightseeing—and yet she often described herself as a homebody. When she and Arthur chose to move to Birch Hill Retirement community in Manchester, it was because Helen found it to be “homey.” She received the most loving and attentive care in her last home in the memory care unit at Birch Hill. Helen was pre-deceased by her husband, her parents, and her older brothers, Sigmund and Theodore. She is survived by her children, Laura Julier (Lansing, MI), Stephen and Holly Julier (Camarillo, CA), Vivian Julier (Warwick, RI), and Alice Julier and Zachary Rubinstein (Pittsburgh, PA), and six grandchildren, Emily Colgan, Christopher Colgan, Kyle Julier, Nick Julier, Zoe Rubinstein, and Esme Rubinstein; her sister-in-law, Teresa Kozlow; and beloved nieces and nephews. A service of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday February 11 at 9:30 AM at Church of Our Savior, Milford, NH. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will follow at 2 PM at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s name may be made to Church of Our Saviour, Milford; the Benevolent Fund, Birch Hill Terrace, Manchester, NH; or VNA of Manchester & Southern NH.
