Geraldine (Gerrie) Porter

Gerrie Porter was born in Caribou, Maine in 1932; the daughter of Cecil and Violet Burgess. In 1960 she, her husband, and son moved to New Hampshire from Turkey and finally settled in Amherst in 1965. Gerrie was a District Representative to U.S. Representatives James Cleveland, Judd Gregg, and Charles Douglas. An active member of the Republican Party, she served as President of the Amherst Republican Women’s Club, President of the New Hampshire Federation of the Republican Women, and was on the Board of the Hillsborough County Republican Committee. She also attended a number of National Republican conventions as a delegate or alternate. Gerrie was President of the Milford Women’s Club and Secretary to the Friends of the Amherst Town Library. From 1982 to 1992 she served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Upon her retirement she became a statewide volunteer for AARP. In 2006 she received that organization’s coveted Andrus Award for community service. In 2012 she received the Golden Deed award from the Breakfast Exchange Club of Nashua for her volunteer contributions. Gerrie was preceded in death by her beloved husband State Senator Fred Porter. Gerrie will join her sister, Sharon Burgess, brother Jim Burgess and other loved ones who have gone before her. She is survived by her son Mark Porter. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday April 21, 2017 at 2:00 PM in Meadowview Cemetery, Foundry Street, Amherst, NH. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Friends of the Amherst Town Library, 14 Main Street, Amherst, NH 03031.
