George F. Ayers

George F. Ayers, 93, formerly of Amherst and Milford, NH passed away peacefully at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton, NH on January 19, 2016. George, who was known as “Red” to his family and friends, was born February 01, 1922 in Dedham, MA to Helen G. (Wright) and Frank P. Ayers. Red graduated from Milford High School and entered the Navy during World War II. In the Navy, he served as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class. Following his service in the Navy, Red worked for the Milford Public Works Department and the Milford School system. After World War II, Red returned home to Milford. On December 17, 1944 Red married Anne Courage. They were happily married for 54 years. Anne Ayers passed away in 1988. Red was an accomplished carpenter. He enjoyed working with his hands and his work demonstrated his attention to detail and talent. Red was also an avid and fierce horseshoe player. He competed successfully in many local horseshoe tournaments. In his spare time, Red enjoyed visiting his camp in Allenstown. Red was loved by his family and friends for his great sense of humor and his quick wit. In addition to his wife, Anne, Red was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Aubin of Milford, NH. Red is survived by three sisters, Agnes Bent of Brookline, NH, Irene Ayers of Manchester, NH and Dorothy McQuown of Merrimack, NH. Red is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A memorial visiting hour will be held Friday, January 22nd from 12:00-1:00pm followed by a funeral service at 1:00pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home 63 Elm St. Milford, NH.
