Emil “Skip” E. Skoglund, Jr., 81, longtime resident of Amherst, NH, died on November 7, 2024, at the Community Hospice House, Merrimack, NH.
He was born on July 21, 1943, in Arlington, MA, the son of Emil E. Skoglund and Anna Amelia (Mantyla) Skoglund. Skip was raised and educated in Arlington, MA, graduating from Arlington High School, Class of 1961. Skip earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Northeastern University and master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received his PE license in NY state.
He had been employed as a civil engineer for Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. for more than thirty years including project management for ‘The Big Dig” in Boston and, most recently, the replacement of the Tappan Zee (the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo) Bridge in South Nyack, NY.
Skip was a voracious reader. He had a particular passion for history and exhibited a remarkable ability to recall (and share!) historical details. He enjoyed skiing and especially loved spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of the Congregational Church of Amherst and particularly loved singing in the Chancel Choir. Skip will be remembered as a wonderful man who “lived life enthusiastically, was quick to laugh, slow to anger, principled and compassionate, generous in spirit and in deed.”
Skip was a proud US Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War.
Family members include his loving wife, Kathryn (Morgan) Skoglund of Amherst, NH; a son, Todd Skoglund and his partner Joe Dagnello of New Bedford, MA; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail Dexter and Jason of Pembroke, NH; a granddaughter, Annelise Dexter; a stepson, Andrew Nicholls and his fiancé, Karrie-Ann LaFountain, of Bakersfield, VT; a grandson and granddaughter, Cee Jay Nicholls of Bakersfield and Bree Nicholls of Marlboro, NH.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in late January. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Congregational Church of Amherst Preservation Fund which supports the maintenance of the historic Amherst Meeting House which Skip lovingly cared for as a longtime member.
