Edward Paul Hopey, 76, long-time resident of Amherst, NH died peacefully on October 22, 2015 surrounded by family, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Boston, MA on Nov. 12, 1938, beloved youngest son of the late Samuel and Evelyn (Carson) Hopey. He was raised and educated in Weymouth, MA and graduated from Weymouth High School in 1957. He served in the United States Army as a member of the Signal Corps, deploying to Korea and Japan. He earned an associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology and then went on to earn a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University. On Sept. 8, 1962 he married his best friend and love of his life, the late Nancy M. (Cappola) Hopey who died in 2010. They had four children and five grandchildren that brought a constant source of love, joy & happiness. They were married for 47 years. As a software engineer, his professional career included work with Bell Labs, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corporation and ATEX Systems, prior to co-founding Edgil Associates Incorporated of Chelmsford, MA in 1984. As President and CEO of Edgil, his company became a pioneer in and stronghold of software solutions for the newspaper and publishing industry in the area of advertisements and credit card payment automation. While education and hard work were strong values, nothing mattered more than his family. He took great pride in his role as a loving and supportive husband, a nurturing father, and adoring grandfather. He was a parishioner and founding member of St. John Neumann in Merrimack and was a regular volunteer in the SHARE and Food Pantry program. He loved the outdoors and being active. An avid horticulturist, he had a strong passion for gardening and landscaping. He enjoyed sailing, running, ice hockey, swimming, golf and fishing. He also had a penchant and talent for carpentry. He was known for his quick and witty sense of humor, keeping those around him on their toes. He is predeceased by his wife Nancy M. (Cappola) Hopey who died in 2010. He is also predeceased by brothers, John and Robert. He is survived by his son Dr. Christopher E. Hopey and his wife Cheryl Lucas of Nashua, NH and a daughter, Cynthia (Hopey) White and her husband Lewis of Amherst, NH, a son, Richard Hopey and his wife Marguerite of Mont Vernon, NH and Michelle Hopey of Nashua, NH; five grandchildren, Lauren White of Beaumont, TX, Rachel White of Amherst, NH; Christopher Hopey Jr. of Nashua, NH Jack and Ethan Hopey of Mont Vernon, NH and a loving sister Jean McGee of Sterling, Alaska as well as many nieces and nephews. Calling hours are on Tuesday, October 27th from 4:00-8:00 pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 am in St. John Neumann Church, 708 Milford Road, Merrimack, NH.
