Dorothy J. Sweeney

Dorothy Jane Sweeney, former longtime resident of Wilton, NH, passed away on October 18, 2024, from a long illness. 

Dorothy was born on January 4, 1943, to Phurnia Quinn and Donald LeBaron in Utica, NY. Dorothy graduated from New Hartford High School. She married John F. Sweeney in 1963. They had a long and happy marriage. They are survived by their three children, Christine, Shawn, and Kelly, and by their many grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Dorothy had a lively and active mind. Dorothy was a creative firestorm. She had a beautiful singing voice and she loved music. She enjoyed painting and later studied graphic arts and photography. In the 1980s, she became fascinated with computers and studied several computer languages. She later took up crafting and sewing and integrated her computer skills to create unique designs for clothing and quilting. She took up writing as well and eventually published 2 novels under the pseudonym PE Quinn: When the Nightengale Sings and Radical Departure. She also enjoyed writing letters to the editor.

Above all, Dorothy loved real estate, particularly purchasing old houses and using her artistic skills to rehabilitate them. Dorothy had the skills and knowledge to rebuild a home from top to bottom. She loved nothing more than spending an afternoon driving and searching for her next real estate purchase. 

Dorothy is originally from Utica, NY and attended Kimball elementary. She still has living friends she cherished who attended that school with her. Dorothy loved Utica and appreciated the older architecture and food of the city. 

Dorothy retired with her husband to the state of New Hampshire in the late 1990s and was able to live nearly 20 years in the dream home her beloved husband, John Sweeney, built for her.

SERVICES: A calling hour will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Second Congregational Church, 25 Gregg Street, Wilton, NH. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the church. Burial will conclude in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wilton.
