Dorothy C. Smith, 100, longtime resident of Mont Vernon, NH died on February 3, 2024, in Goffstown NH. She was born on January 4, 1924, in Manchester, NH, a daughter of Joseph Frye Caverly and Florence (Milliken) Caverly. She was a graduate of Youngsville Grammar School and a 1941 graduate of St. Joseph High School for Girls as Valedictorian. She attended Stevens Secretarial School, NH School of Accounting (now SNHU) and the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences.
She was a resident of Mont Vernon for 75 years. Prior to her marriage she had been employed in the accounting department of the Union Leader Corporation. Later she worked at the Lincoln and Edwards Law Office, retiring as Administrative Assistant to the Mont Vernon Selectmen.
Dorothy was a member of the Mont Vernon Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Hillsborough County Extension, serving as a 4-H leader for several years. Always interested in town affairs, she had, over the years, served as Town Treasurer, Tax Collector, Town Clerk, Librarian, School Board member, Secretary to the Selectmen, Budget Committee member, Salary Study Committee, Planning Board Administration, ZBA Recording Secretary, Library Volunteer, Deputy Town Treasurer and Administrative Assistant to Selectmen. For 50 years she and her family decorated veterans’ graves in Greenlawn Cemetery for Memorial Day, now done by her daughter’s family.
She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Anne Elizabeth Smith in 1985 and her husband of 50 years Walter Guild Smith in 1999.
Family members include 2 daughters; Barbara Smith Whipple of Mont Vernon, NH and Margaret Smith Garel of Aurora, CO. 3 sons; Harry Allen Smith of Mann’s Choice, PA, Scott Caverly Smith of Murfreesboro, TN and David Guild Smith of Plano, TX. 10 Grandchildren,4 Great Grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. Services will be held at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to “Boys Town” or the Mont Vernon Fire Department, 1 Main Street, P.O. Box 483, Mont Vernon, NH 03057.
