Dorothy B. Richards

Dorothy B. Richards, 104, resident of Milford, NH died on July 24, 2016 at the Elms Care & Rehabilitation Center, Milford. She was born in Raymond, NH on July 9, 1912, a daughter of Nellie (Clement) Townsend York and Roy Townsend. Dorothy was a devoted, hardworking mother raising her only child alone. She spent most of her life in Nashua and retired from J.F. McElwain Shoe Factory after 43 years of service. After moving to Milford, she was one of the original residents of the Mill Apartments upon its opening and resided there until entering The Elms. Due to losing her father at an early age, she and her siblings had a difficult childhood and because of this it made it hard for her to show outward emotions of love. Family and friends understood and knew her to be deep down loving and caring. She was a fashionably dressed lady and could sew, knit, crochet and made many lovely items in her earlier years. In her leisure time she loved to do crossword puzzles. Dorothy would have loved to continue her schooling after Junior High but not being possible she managed to self-educate herself and was a remarkably intelligent woman. She loved the Red Sox, pro golf, major racing events and had spent many weekends at Rockingham Park. Her gambling itch continued with her love of scratch and sweepstake tickets. Summer vacations were spent at Wells Beach, Maine with her daughter. She enjoyed Sunday rides trying out various restaurants and if the eatery was not to her liking she would say, “cross that one off the list.” Dorothy will be remembered for her sense of humor and straight forward honesty. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Townsend; a sister, Irene Saraceno and a half-sister, Beatrice Sargent. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Janice Beaulieu of Newport News, VA; two grandchildren and their spouses, David and Cheryl Beaulieu of Milford, NH, Darcy and Bill Atkinson of Newport News, VA; four great grandchildren, Derek Beaulieu of Milford, Dana Beaulieu of Manchester, NH, Adam Smith of Nashua, NH, Andrea Smith and her husband, David of Merrimack, NH; one great-great grandson, Dimitri Smith of Merrimack; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are private. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Share Outreach Inc., One Columbus Avenue, Milford, NH 03055.
