Barbara W. Wilkins, 80, a resident of Amherst, NH, died on March 27, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Portsmouth on July 27, 1936, eldest daughter of William C. and Mildred (Mustin) Walton. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and her master’s degree from Lowell University. Mrs. Wilkins made her home in Amherst for the past 18 years, and formerly lived in Hollis, NH for 38 years. She was a school teacher at Hollis/Brookline High School for 35 years, where she taught math and had been head of the math department. Following her retirement, she tutored many students and helped prepare them for their SAT’s. Mrs. Wilkins was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Hollis Teacher’s Association, the Appalachian Mountain Club and Friends of the Amherst Library. She loved volunteering with the SHARE food pantry. Prior to moving to Amherst, she was a long-time member of the Hollis Congregational Church. Barbara was an avid skier and hiker. She enjoyed reading, quilting, traveling and was a wonderful cook. Most of all, Barbara was a loving wife, a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was predeceased by her sister, Janice Walton, and a granddaughter, Kathryn Rios. Family members include her husband of 58 years, Gerald A. Wilkins of Amherst, NH; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sally Wilkins of Amherst, NH; a daughter, Carolee Prevost of Orlando, FL; eight grandchildren, Rebekah Herrick and Aaron Wilkins, Rachel Martus, Isaac Wilkins, Christopher Soucy, Heather Soucy, Jonah Prevost and Hannah Prevost; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Brown of Orlando, FL and Joan Sanborn of Portsmouth, NH. There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on April 8, 2017 at 12:00pm in the Grace Lutheran Church, 130 Spit Brook Road, Nashua, NH, followed by a reception in the church hall. Burial will be in Meadowview Cemetery, Amherst, NH at a later date.
