Alton J. “Al” Brooks, 75, of Jefferson, Maine, died October 16, 2001 at Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME. 

He was born in Hartland, Maine on February 14, 1926, a son of Frank Brooks and Mabel (Tuttle) Brooks Ames. Mr. Brooks had been a resident of Jefferson for the past 15 years and had formerly resided in Milford, NH for 20 years. He and his wife wintered in Estero, FL. 

He and his wife currently own and operate Brooks Farm Marine in Jefferson. While living in Milford they owned Brooks Lawn & Garden for 18 years. He had also been employed at W.R. Grace Co., Nashua, NH for several years.

Alton was a life member if the Harley Sanford Post #4368 VFW, Milford, NH, the VFW, Washington, and American Legion, Waldoboro. He was raised in Benevolent Lodge #7 F & AM, Milford, NH; past master of Riverside Lodge #135 F & AM, Jefferson, a member of William Pitt Tavern Lodge #1789 F & AM, Strawberry Banke, Portsmouth, NH. He was a former member of the Bektash Temple, Concord, NH, where he had served as a member of the Color Guard and The Legion of Honor. He was also a member of Sword of Bunker Hill, Gaspee Order #99, Providence, RI, Araba Temple, Fort Myers, FL, where he was a member of the Tin Lizzies; Kora Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Lewiston, ME; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite-Lodge Council Chapel Consistory, Valley of Nashua. He was a former member of the National Campers & Travelers. 

Al was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Whitefield, ME. 

Mr. Brooks was a US Army veteran, having served in World War II with Company L, 385th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division. He was engaged in active ground combat on the front lines in Luxembourg and Germany, including the Siegfried Line. Alton was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, The European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/3 bronze service stars, and the Good Conduct Medal. 

He was predeceased by his stepfather, Horace Ames, a son, Alton J. “Butch” Brooks , Jr. and a brother, Clayton Brooks. 

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Donna E. (Bashaw) Brooks of Jefferson, ME; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Gretchen Brooks of Milford, NH; Gary A. and Debbie Brooks of Seabrook, NH; two daughters, Barbara J. Korenthal of Toms River, NJ and Bobbie Ann Silvia of New Jersey; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. 

Visiting hours will be held on October 19th at Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial on October 20th in St. Patrick’s Church, Milford, NH. Burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.
