Alfred C. Byrnes, 89, resident of Mont Vernon, NH died on January 14, 2019 after a brief illness. He was born on May 9, 1929, a son of the late Alfred H. and Dorothy (Williams) Byrnes of Needham, MA. He attended Northeastern University and was a member of the hockey team. Al had been employed by Deary Brothers, Inc. in Webster, MA and ran the largest dairy processing plant in New England. He had also worked for Residence Inn in Livermore, CA as the chief engineer. He loved golf, appeared in many amateur theater productions, loved animals and most especially spending time with his family. Al was very active in his community having volunteered at the V.F.W. Auxiliary in San Ramon, CA and at Valley Memorial Hospital in Livermore, CA. Locally, he served on the Ways and Means Committee and Amherst School Board in the 1960’s. He was a member of the original Board of Directors at the Amherst Country Club and a member of Kiwanis Club, Manchester, NH. Al was a very special man and made quite an impression on everyone who ever met him. He will be remembered as a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a great friend to many. He never passed up an opportunity to give anyone a hug. He loved our little Town of Mont Vernon, participating in local activities with our miniature horses, or just taking walks with our dogs, caring for his home, visiting neighbors, watching local sports teams, or simply visiting the transfer station and especially the post office visits to chat with Leslie. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and he loved his country, and his family above all else. Al was predeceased by a daughter, Janet Byrnes Mack; and a brother, Frederick Byrnes. Family members include his wife of 40 years, Gail (Cady) Byrnes of Mont Vernon, NH; a daughter and son-in-law, Jayne and David Wing of Amherst, NH; four sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred Byrnes of Windham, NH, Robert and Kathy Byrnes of Kittery, ME, Sean and Stephanie Gorman of Wilton, NH, Michael and Heather Gorman of Los Gatos, CA; ten grandchildren, Walter Scarborough of NY, NY, Richard Byrnes of Winthrop, MA, Jennifer Broek of Allenstown, NH, Julie Lawes of Manchester, NH, Tyler Wing of Bedford, NH, Amy Potter of Worcester, VT, Mia Gorman of Wilton, NH, Carter Gorman, Wesley Gorman and Miles Gorman, all of Los Gatos, CA; three great grandsons, Quinn Potter, Jason Broek and Jordan Lawes; a sister, Dorothy Fulton of Winchester, MA; two brothers, Richard Byrnes of Plainville, MA and Eddie Byrnes of CA; many nieces and nephews. At Al’s request there will be no services. A private Celebration of Al’s Life will be held by the family at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
