Alan Edgar Wurdeman, 63, resident of Providence, RI died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. He was born in Manchester, NH on March 3, 1948, a son of Bruce Vanderbilt Wurdeman and Emma Louise (Smith) Wurdeman. An only child, Mr. Wurdeman was raised in Milford, NH, attended Milford public schools and the First Congregational Church. He was a member of Troop 4, Boy Scouts of America, rank of Star. He moved to Nashua, NH in 1962 and graduated from Nashua Senior High School, Class of 1966. He was a member and past master councilor of Nashua Chapter, International Order of DeMolay. Mr. Wurdeman attended Keene State College from 1966-1967, transferred to Northeastern University in Boston in 1967 and joined staff of Northeastern News student weekly. Assignments included covering anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and the Harvard Square riot during national student moratorium, spring 1970. He was a Charter member of Northeastern Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Professional Journalism Society. In addition, he worked for the Boston Globe, Lowell Sun and Raytheon Co., as participant in the cooperative education program. He graduated in June of 1971, with a Liberal Arts degree in English/Journalism. After graduation, he joined the staff of Framingham News, Framingham, MA, which became the South Middlesex News soon after, as police and courts reporter, photographer and desk editor. In 1976, Mr. Wurdeman began working part-time at the Providence Evening Bulletin and joined the copy desk full-time in 1978. He moved to the Sunday Journal and then the Providence Journal as a copy editor and suburban sections editor until May 2008, when he left to begin cancer treatment. He attended Harvard University Business School evening program from 1982-1983. Mr. Wurdemann was a thirty-year resident of Moshassuck Square apartments on North Main Street, Providence. He enjoyed sailing his 22-foot Cape Dory sloop “Agate” out of Tiverton for weekends on the Bay. Family members include several cousins. There are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 10th at 1:00 pm in Riverside Cemetery, 454 Nashua Street, Milford, NH.
