Anne Dalrymple Krantz

Anne Dalrymple Krantz, 80, of Amherst, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2022, surrounded by her family and their love.

Born on May 22, 1942 in Lockport NY, Anne was the daughter of the late Daniel Metzger Dalrymple and Esther Shappee Dalrymple. Anne was predeceased by her brothers Ross Dalrymple, Dana Dalrymple, and Douglas Dalrymple, and her sister-in-law Helen Dalrymple. She was also predeceased by her daughter Laura Anne Krantz in 2021.

Anne grew up in Lockport NY, spending summers working on her family’s apple farm on Lake Ontario. She moved to Delmar NY in high school where she met her husband Karl Theodor Krantz before going to Cornell where she earned her bachelor's degree. Anne and Ted were married in 1966, and were blessed with four children. They lived in Valley Forge PA, Chambéry and St-Nom-La-Bretèche in France, before settling in Amherst NH in 1983. During nearly 40 years in Amherst, Anne followed her passions of gardening, conservation, music, and history and gave selflessly to make a positive impact on the community.

Anne volunteered for numerous roles with the Cub Scouts, the Amherst Conservation Commission, the Heritage Commission, the Stormwater Committee, the local planning board, and the NH State Pesticide Control Board. She was active for decades with the Amherst Garden Club, becoming very involved in the annual plant sale, including nurturing cuttings from her home, as well as innumerable sugar maple saplings carefully transplanted from the woods. A perpetual teacher, she contributed to the Garden Club newsletter a long series of educational articles on endemic and invasive species, among many other topics. After completing the Natural Resources Stewards program, she volunteered with the NH Cooperative Extension, at which she described herself appropriately as a “happy volunteer”. She shared her learnings through more than 25 articles, regularly answered phones on the info call-in line, and was an enthusiastic contributor to the NH Big Tree program. She also used her gardening skills to teach at the New Hampshire Correctional Facility for Women. She established the Dalrymple Community Engagement Fellowship at the Extension in 2005 to support graduate student engagement with New Hampshire communities.

Anne was an active member of the Amherst Congregational Church, to which she contributed innumerable flower arrangements as well as her time, most recently as Church Historian. She wrote extensively about the history of the Church, and over 50 of her articles were compiled into a book last year. Anne was also active with the Amherst Historical Society, as well as the Nipmugs, and is responsible for many Amherst commemorative suncatchers hanging in windows across southern NH. Anne took up the French Horn as a child, and returned to it after a long break, becoming active in the Amherst Town Band, as well as bands in Hollis and the American Legion band in Nashua. Anne’s passions and contributions were recognized in 2021 when she was honored at the town’s 4th of July Parade as Amherst’s Citizen of the Year by the Amherst Lions Club.

Anne will be remembered for her zest, her high energy and her infectious passion for nature. She was generous with her time, her laughter and her knowledge, all of which she shared to help people learn about history, conservation, and plants. Her family will remember her less public hobbies of cooking, sewing, and painting. More than anything else, Anne loved learning and listening, sharing and educating.

Anne is survived by her husband,Ted, her sons, Kristoff Krantz, Randall Krantz, and Dale Krantz, and her grandchildren Hannah Krantz, Colby Tolman, Sofia Krantz, and Arlo Krantz. She is also survived by her brother Roger Dalrymple, and her sisters-in-law Bonnie Dalrymple, Nancy Dalrymple and Pam Dalrymple.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Date and time to be announced here.  Burial will be in the Meadowview Cemetery in Amherst.
